The bulk discount crossover: when more costs less
Volume pricing creates a strange zone: at 95 units with a 100-unit tier ahead, buying 5 more can lower your total bill. With $25 units at 5% off (50+) and 10% off (100+): 95 units cost $2,256, but 100 units cost $2,250. This calculator hunts that crossover automatically — the "units to next tier" line tells you when topping up the order is free money.
Reading a supplier's tier sheet
Most B2B price sheets are all-units discounts: hit the threshold and every unit gets the lower price (that's what this calculator models). The rarer incremental model discounts only units above each threshold — cheaper for the seller, worse for you. If a quote doesn't specify, ask; on a large order the difference is hundreds of dollars.
For sellers: designing tiers that don't bleed
Tier discounts come straight out of margin, so anchor them to your cost curve: does a 250-unit order genuinely cost you less per unit to fulfill (shipping density, setup amortization)?
