How this reads a WiFi code from an image
Image → decode → WIFI:T:...;S:...;P:...;; → split into fieldsWIFI: string is split so the network name and the password are shown separately. Useful when the code is on a screen or a printed card and you have no second device to scan with. Remember S is the network name, P is the password: confusing the two is the usual error when reading the raw string by eye. Decoding is image processing: the three large finder patterns in the corners locate the symbol, the timing patterns align the grid, the modules are read, then Reed–Solomon error correction reconstructs anything damaged or obscured. That is why a code with a logo over the centre, or a torn corner, often still reads: at level H roughly 30% of the symbol can be lost and still recover. QR codes follow ISO/IEC 18004. Error correction comes in four levels, L (~7% recoverable), M (~15%), Q (~25%) and H (~30%), and a quiet zone of at least 4 modules of clear space is required around the symbol for reliable scanning. The quiet zone matters more than people expect. The specification asks for a clear margin four modules wide around the symbol: roughly the width of four of the small squares. Crop into that margin and a decoder can no longer locate the finder patterns, so a perfectly intact code becomes unreadable.
Taking a screenshot that scans first time
- Zoom the code until it fills most of the screen, then capture. More pixels per module means a more forgiving decode.
- Leave visible white space around all four edges before cropping.
- Avoid photographing a screen with another phone if you can screenshot instead: moiré patterns from the pixel grid confuse decoders badly.
- If the code is in a PDF, export the page as an image rather than screenshotting a zoomed-out view.
QR codes carry Reed–Solomon error correction, so a symbol can survive real damage: up to about 30 percent loss at the highest level. What it cannot survive is a missing corner or a resolution so low that adjacent modules blur into each other.
