How to make a QR code for a phone number
- Pick call or SMS: choose "Phone call" for a code that dials you, or "SMS text" for one that opens a pre-written message.
- Enter your number with country code: for example +1 for the US. This is what makes the code work from any country.
- Add a message (SMS mode): optional pre-filled text so the scanner just hits send.

One scan to call or text you
A phone-number QR code removes the friction between seeing your number and using it. Point a camera at it and the phone either opens the dialer with your number loaded, or opens the messaging app with a pre-written text ready to send. No typing, no misdials, no lost leads. Call mode vs SMS mode
Call mode encodes a tel: link: scanning starts a call to your number. SMS mode encodes the number plus an optional message, so the customer's text app opens pre-filled with something like "Hi, I'd like a quote." That pre-fill is powerful for lead capture: it lowers the effort to reach out and tells you exactly which sign or flyer the enquiry came from if you vary the message.
Always include the country code
The single most common reason these codes fail is a missing country code. Enter your number in full international form (+1 555 123 4567 for the US) so it works whether the scanner is next door or overseas. The code is static and never expires. It keeps working as long as the number is yours.

Print materials aimed at trade-show or job-site audiences should add a short URL fallback beneath the QR code for that minority. SMS pre-fill length limits and carrier truncation
The smsto: scheme passes body text as a URI query parameter. Verification and testing before deployment
Always test the generated code on two separate devices before printing. Scan with a native camera app, not a browser-based decoder - they handle URI scheme launching differently. Verify that the dialler or messaging app opens with the correct number pre-populated. For high-volume print runs above 500 units, test across at least one iOS and one Android device at the exact print size. Recheck any code that was resized after generation; scaling a raster export below 100% can collapse quiet-zone margins and raise scan failure rates by 15–30%.
Dial an extension automatically
A plain tel: code stops at the main line. If callers should land on extension 204 behind an auto attendant, add pause characters before you generate. Most dialers read each comma as a pause of about 2 seconds, then send the remaining digits as touch tones:

That string dials the main number, waits roughly 4 seconds for the menu to pick up, then keys 204. A semicolon works as a hard wait on many dialers: the phone pauses and asks the caller to tap before it sends the extension. Emoji cut the pre-fill budget by more than half
The 160 character single-segment limit only holds while every character stays in the GSM-7 set: plain letters, digits, basic punctuation. Past 160 the message splits into 153 character chunks, since 7 characters of each chunk go to the reassembly header. One emoji, curly quote, or accented name flips the whole message to UCS-2 encoding and the ceiling drops to 70 characters, 67 per chunk once split. The scanner pays for what they send: a 100 character ASCII pre-fill leaves them 60 characters before a second segment, while the same pre-fill with one emoji is already 30 past the UCS-2 line. Keep pre-fills plain ASCII and short, like Re: Invoice 4021 at 16 characters.
Phone QR vs WhatsApp QR
A phone QR reaches the dialer or the SMS app. A WhatsApp QR is an ordinary link code that encodes https://wa.me/13125550164: country code first, digits only, no plus sign, spaces, or leading zeros. Scanning opens a chat with that number inside WhatsApp. Append ?text= with a URL encoded message to pre-fill the first line: https://wa.me/13125550164?text=Quote%20request.
wa.me wins for international audiences: it rides on data, adds no per-message charge, and carries photos of the job. SMS wins for US local trades because it reaches every handset with no app installed. And if the scan should end in payment rather than conversation, point people at a Venmo or Cash App QR instead.
Print size by placement, the 10:1 rule
The 2 cm floor assumes scanning from about 20 cm away. Real placements sit farther back, and a reliable rule is scan distance divided by 10 equals minimum code width.
