How to Scan a QR Code on a Laptop or PC: 4 Ways That Work
Yes, a laptop or PC can scan a QR code, and you do not need to install anything to do it. There are four ways that work, and the right one depends on where the code is: on your screen, on paper, or somewhere you need the link to end up on your phone instead. This covers all four on Windows, Mac and Chromebook.
Can a laptop scan a QR code at all?
It can. The reason people assume it cannot is that Windows, macOS and ChromeOS have no QR scanner built into the system the way phones do. There is no camera app that just reads codes. What a laptop has instead is a browser, and a browser can read a QR code two ways: from an image file, or from a live webcam feed. Both work well, and neither one needs a download or an account.
Method 1: use the webcam your laptop already has
Most laptops built in the last ten years have a webcam above the screen. It is a weaker camera than the one on your phone, but a QR code is a high contrast pattern and a webcam handles that fine at about 20cm away.
Open a browser based scanner, allow camera access when the browser asks, then hold the printed code up to the webcam. Keep it flat and hold it still. Webcams focus slowly compared to a phone, so give it two or three seconds before you decide it is not working.
This is the method for codes on paper: a business card, a poster, a parking sign, a menu, a letter from your bank.
Two things stop it. Plenty of desktop PCs have no webcam at all. And on Windows, either a physical privacy shutter or the setting under Settings, Privacy and security, Camera can block browser access while the hardware itself is perfectly fine. If the browser says it cannot find a camera, check that setting before you blame the laptop.
Method 2: upload the image or a screenshot
When the code is already on your screen, inside an email, a PDF, a booking confirmation or a web page, using the webcam is the long way round. Capture the code as an image and read the image instead.
If the code is a picture on a web page, right click it and choose Save image as. That is one step. If it sits inside a PDF viewer or an app where right click does nothing useful, take a screenshot of that part of the screen.

This is the fastest option for anything already on screen, and it is the only one that works if your machine has no camera at all.
Screenshot shortcuts for Windows, Mac and Chromebook
- Windows 10 and 11: press Win + Shift + S, drag a box over the QR code, then paste it straight into the scanner or find it in your Pictures folder.
- Mac: press Cmd + Shift + 4 and drag over the code. The image lands on your desktop.
- Chromebook: press Ctrl + Shift + Show Windows, which is the key shaped like a rectangle with two lines beside it. Pick the area and the capture saves to Downloads.
Crop reasonably tight around the code. Extra page content around it will not stop the decode, but a tight crop helps a lot when the code is small on screen to begin with.
Method 3: right click and send it to Google Lens
In Chrome and Edge there is a shortcut hiding in the right click menu. Right click the QR image and choose Search with Google Lens. A panel opens on the right side and reads the code, usually showing you the link within a second or two.
It is quick, but two catches are worth knowing. It uploads the image to Google, so it is not the private choice. And it only shows up when the code is a real image on the page. It does nothing for a code inside a PDF viewer, or for a screenshot you have not saved yet.
Method 4: point your phone at the laptop screen
Obvious, and people still forget it. Open the camera app on your phone and point it at the code on your laptop screen. Phone cameras read screens without any trouble as long as the code is big enough and your brightness is turned up.
Use this one when the link needs to end up on your phone anyway. Login codes, WiFi codes, app downloads and boarding passes all fall into that group. Scanning them on the laptop just leaves you retyping something later.
If it will not catch, raise the screen brightness. A dim screen plus a glossy finish is the usual reason, not the phone.
Which method should you pick?
- Code is on your screen and you want the link on your laptop: save or screenshot the image, then upload it.
- Code is printed on paper: hold it up to the webcam.
- Code is on your screen but you want the link on your phone: point your phone at the screen.
- Code is a plain image on a web page and you are in a hurry: right click, then Search with Google Lens.
- No camera anywhere and the code is on paper: ask someone to photograph it and send it to you, then upload that photo. Slightly blurry photos still decode as long as all three corner squares are visible.
Do you need a QR scanner app for a laptop?
No, and most of the ones in the Microsoft Store and the Chrome Web Store are worth skipping. Reading a QR code is a small, well solved job. Anything that wants install rights, access to your browsing history, or a monthly fee to do it is charging you for something a web page already does for free.
The one real exception is scanning codes all day as part of a job, such as warehouse stock or ticket entry. There a proper handheld scanner that types the result like a keyboard beats every method on this page.
WiFi QR codes need a different tool
The QR codes printed on routers and cafe walls hold the network name and password as plain text. Scan one with a general scanner and you get a raw string like WIFI:T:WPA;S:NetworkName;P:password123;;, which is correct but awkward to read.

Is scanning this way safe?
Safer than a phone camera scan, in fact, because you get to read the link before anything opens. A phone often jumps straight to the page. On a laptop you see the destination first and decide.

Can I scan a QR code from a website without screenshotting it?
Yes. Right click the QR image and choose Save image as, then upload that file. It is one step fewer than a screenshot. In Chrome and Edge you can also right click and choose Search with Google Lens to skip saving entirely.
Why will my laptop webcam not read the code?
Usually one of three things. The code is too close, so hold it around 20cm back. The webcam has not finished focusing, so hold still for a few seconds. Or camera access is blocked, either by a privacy shutter on the lid or by the camera permission in your system settings. Check the browser address bar for a blocked camera icon.
Can I scan a QR code inside a PDF?
Yes. Most PDF viewers will not let you right click and save the image, so take a screenshot of the code instead and upload that. Zoom in first if the code is small on the page, because a bigger capture decodes more reliably.
Does Windows 11 have a built in QR code scanner?
Not as a standalone feature. The Camera app can show a QR code through the webcam but does not act on it the way a phone does. The reliable route on Windows 11 is still a browser based scanner, using either the webcam or an uploaded image.
Can I scan a QR code on a Chromebook without a camera?
Yes, and this is the most common no camera case of the lot. Screenshot the code with Ctrl + Shift + Show Windows and upload it to the scanner. No extension and no Android app required.
Does any of this work offline?
Once the tool page has loaded, the decoding runs entirely in your browser, so losing your connection part way through does not break it. Opening the link it gives you obviously still needs a connection.
