- Pick the finish level: Level 4 is standard paint-ready; Level 5 (full skim) feeds critical-light walls and adds ~35% compound.

How much mud and tape per sheet of drywall?
Working numbers the trade uses: about 1.7 gallons of joint compound and 12 feet of tape per 4x8 sheet for a standard Level 4 finish, so a 30-sheet room needs roughly 11 gallons (two-and-a-half 4.5-gal boxes) and one 250-ft roll of tape with headroom. This calculator scales those factors to your sheet count or footage and adjusts for finish level, because a Level 5 skim coat quietly adds a third more mud.
Which compound for which coat
All-purpose does everything acceptably and is the one-bucket answer. Pros split it: setting-type ("hot mud") for taping. It hardens chemically, shrinks little, lets you recoat same-day; lightweight topping for finish coats: sands like butter. Paper tape with all-purpose or hot mud makes the strongest seams; mesh tape needs setting compound (it will crack over premixed).
The coats and where the mud goes
Three coats is the standard: tape coat (bed the tape), fill coat (widen to ~10"), finish coat (feather to 12"+). Roughly 40% of your compound goes in the fill coat. Corner bead drinks mud too: the calculator's bead line covers typical outside-corner counts, but a corner-heavy layout (closets, bulkheads) deserves a bead recount before you shop.

Standards and references
Compound and tape usage follows the coverage rates published in the GA-216 (Application and Finishing of Gypsum Panel Products) standard from the Gypsum Association. Compound itself is manufactured to ASTM C475, and drywall tape to ASTM C1047. A Level 4 finish (typical for painted walls) is defined in the GA-214 recommended-levels document.
Scope limits of this calculator
This tool calculates mud and tape for flat tapered seams only. It does not account for corner bead compound, texture coats, skim coats over existing drywall, or repairs to damaged board. Corner beads consume roughly 0.08 lbs of all-purpose compound per linear foot per coat - add that separately. Ceiling texture (orange peel or knockdown) requires an additional 0.03โ0.06 gallons of compound per square foot depending on splatter density; the calculator does not include this pass.
The tool assumes standard 5/8-in or 1/2-in Type X gypsum board with factory-tapered edges. Butt joints - where two non-tapered ends meet - require a wider mud bed and consume approximately 40% more compound per linear foot than tapered seams. Factory default waste in most estimating systems is 10โ15% for mud. That figure applies to experienced crews in controlled conditions. First-time installers or jobs with high butt-joint counts should use 20โ25%. Compound left in an open bucket overnight absorbs water and cannot be returned to the original consistency; plan for 3โ5% evaporative loss per open working day in low-humidity climates.
Paper tape ships in 500-ft rolls. Mesh tape ships in 300-ft rolls. Order in full-roll increments - partial rolls from distributors are typically sold at the same price as full rolls, so underordering costs twice. A 1,200 sq ft single-story house averages 1,800โ2,200 linear feet of seams, requiring 4โ5 rolls of paper tape with standard waste.
Pre-mixed all-purpose compound weighs approximately 13 lbs per gallon when purchased and shrinks 15โ25% by volume as it dries across three coats. That shrinkage is what drives the need for multiple passes - it is not optional. IRC Section R702.3.5 requires taped and finished joints for gypsum board used as a wall surface in habitable rooms.
