How to Share Your WiFi with Guests Using a Printed QR Code
Reading your WiFi password aloud letter by letter, "lowercase b, the number zero, no wait, capital O", is a ritual nobody enjoys. A printed WiFi QR code ends it permanently: guests point their camera, tap once, and they are online. Here is how to set it up in five minutes, free.
Step 1: Generate the code

Step 2: Test before you print
Scan your new code with your own phone before printing. If it connects, print it. If it shows text instead, check for a typo in the SSID: one wrong character breaks the whole code. You can verify what is inside the code with our WiFi QR decoder.
Step 3: Print and place it
- Home: Fridge door or entryway shelf. A plain 6x6 cm print works from a meter away.
- Airbnb / guest house: Frame it with the house rules. Hosts report it kills the number-one guest message instantly.
- Cafe or restaurant: Table tents or the counter. Print at 8x8 cm or bigger so it scans from standing height.
- Office: Reception desk for the guest network only: never print your internal network code.
Design tips that actually matter
Keep high contrast: dark code on light background. Leave a white margin (the "quiet zone") around the code at least four squares wide. Security: what a WiFi QR code exposes
Anyone who can photograph the code can extract your password. It is stored in plain text inside the code, as our WiFi QR format guide shows. So: print the guest network, not your main one; place codes where only invited people see them; and change the password if a code was posted somewhere public. For a cafe this is fine: the password is public anyway. For your home network with your work laptop on it, use a separate guest SSID.

Does the QR code stop working if I change my password?
Yes: the password is baked into the printed code. Change the password, print a new code. Two minutes.
Can guests see my password from the QR code?
Yes, if they decode it deliberately. A WiFi QR code is convenience, not secrecy: treat it exactly like telling them the password.
Do WiFi QR codes expire?
No. They are static text: they work forever, or until you change your network name or password.
Error correction level and the four-module margin
ISO/IEC 18004 defines four error correction levels: L, M, Q and H, recovering roughly seven, fifteen, twenty-five and thirty percent of the codewords. Higher costs modules. A 38-byte guest payload like WIFI:T:WPA;S:GuestNet;P:mangoriver47;; fits a version 3 symbol at M, 29 modules square; at Q it grows to version 4, 33 square; at H, version 5, 37 square. Print all three at 40 mm and the module shrinks from 1.38 mm to 1.08 mm. A laser copes. An inkjet on uncoated stock, where dark modules bleed outward and eat the light ones, fails on the H version first.
Match the level to the surface. Behind glass or matte laminate, M is enough. A card that gets thumbed or curled onto a doorframe justifies Q. H suits scuffed stickers, printed larger.
The four-module quiet zone belongs to the symbol. A decoder finds the three finder patterns by scanning lines for a 1:1:3:1:1 run of dark and light. Put a dark border, a photo edge or a coloured panel against the outer ring and that run breaks, because border and ring read as one band. The code is undamaged and unscannable. At 1.38 mm modules the margin is 5.5 mm of nothing on all four sides, and it is the first thing a layout crops. On coloured stock a transparent code lets the card colour fill the light modules and the margin, which holds on pale paper and collapses on mid-tones.
Put it on the guest network, then rotate
Whoever photographs the card holds the key until you change it. A printed code is a bearer token with no expiry. Put it on the guest SSID with client isolation on, so a visitor's laptop cannot reach the NAS, printer or cameras, and rotate that password every few months and after any event where the card sat out in public. If one phone joins and the next does nothing, decode the card with the WiFi QR decoder and check the password for a semicolon, comma, colon or backslash; those four must be backslash-escaped in the payload, and a hidden SSID needs H:true.
Test the card, not the screen
A screen version proves nothing about the print. Screens are backlit, pixel-perfect and higher contrast than paper ever gets. Tape one proof where the card will live, then scan it there with the WiFi QR code scanner at the hour that room is dimmest, from arm's length, at the angle a guest holds a phone. A usable rule of thumb for scan distance is ten times the symbol width, so a 40 mm code should read at about 400 mm. Try a five-year-old Android alongside a current iPhone. Laminate first, then test, because gloss throws the flash back into the lens.
