How to Scan a QR Code Without a Camera (3 Fast Ways)
You do not need a webcam, smartphone camera, or external optical scanner to read a QR code. When you receive a QR code in an email, PDF document, presentation slide, or webpage, you can decode the payload directly from an image file or screenshot.

Supported Image Formats, Resolution, and Error Correction
QR codes are defined under ISO/IEC 18004. The code consists of dark and light modules organized into square grids ranging from 21x21 modules (Version 1) up to 177x177 modules (Version 40). When scanning from a static file rather than a camera stream, image quality dictates decode success.

Why Browser-Side Decoding Keeps Your Data Private
Unlike cloud-based OCR services that upload your images to remote servers, this tool executes 100% within your local browser tab using compiled JavaScript. Troubleshooting: Why a Screenshot QR Code Fails to Scan
If an uploaded image does not decode immediately, check the following common issues:
- Low Contrast: The decoder requires at least 70% contrast difference between the dark modules and the light background. Dark blue on black or light yellow on white will fail detection.
- Heavy JPEG Artifacts: High compression creates fuzzy grey halos around square corners, tricking the boundary finder. Crop closer to the code and re-save as PNG.
- Extreme Skew or Tilt: Built-in finder patterns compensate for up to 30 degrees of skew. For photographs taken at extreme angles, rotate and straighten the image before uploading.
- PDF Vector Rasterization: When exporting QR codes from PDF files, ensure the rendering DPI is set to at least 150 DPI. Low 72 DPI exports blur module edges.
