How to use the Instacart tax calculator

  1. Enter your yearly Instacart earnings: batch pay and customer tips combined. Use the total from your 1099-NEC in Stripe Express, or your own deposit records if the form has not arrived.
  2. Enter driving miles only: store to customer, store to store on multi-store batches, and repositioning between stores. Miles walked inside the store do not count.
  3. Add other expenses: insulated bags and coolers, parking while shopping or delivering, cart fees, the business share of your phone plan.
  4. Add W-2 income if shopping is your side gig: it sets the bracket your shopper profit lands in.
  5. Save the quarterly amount: Instacart withholds nothing; the IRS still expects payment four times a year.

Instacart taxes: batch pay and tips are all gross

Instacart withholds nothing from full-service shoppers. Batch pay and customer tips land in your account gross, and at filing time the IRS expects 15.3% self-employment tax plus income tax on your profit. This Instacart tax calculator runs the whole chain: mileage deduction, expenses, SE tax, income tax, and the amount to set aside each quarter. Mileage is still your biggest deduction, but shopping has a wrinkle pure delivery drivers never deal with: a large share of your working time happens inside the store, on foot, with your car parked.

Which miles count: store aisles don't

Deductible miles are driving miles: store to the customer's door, between stores on multi-store batches, and repositioning to the next store. Time pushing a cart through aisles adds nothing to this line because mileage is a vehicle deduction. That is why a shopper's mileage deduction runs lower per dollar earned than a DoorDash driver's: still meaningful, rarely gross-erasing. Log the driving legs as they happen with a mileage app or a dated notebook; reconstructed logs are the first thing challenged in an audit. The 2026 IRS standard mileage rate is 72.5 cents per mile from January 1 to June 30 and 76 cents from July 1, and this calculator uses the average of the two, 74.25 cents, for a full year of miles. The rate replaces gas, maintenance, insurance, and depreciation, so you cannot stack actual car costs on top of it.

Your 1099 lives in Stripe Express, not the Shopper app

Instacart issues the 1099-NEC through Stripe Express, a separate portal you activate from an email sent by Stripe, not by Instacart. Every January shoppers miss that email, never set up the account, then hunt through the Shopper app for a form that was never going to be there. If you cannot find your 1099, search your inbox and spam folder for Stripe Express first. Form or no form, the tax is owed the same: your deposits define your income, not the paperwork.

A worked example

Say you grossed $28,000 in batch pay and tips and logged 9,000 driving miles. Mileage deduction: 9,000 × $0.7425 = $6,682.50. Add $400 of gear and fees: insulated bags, parking near apartment buildings, cart fees. Net profit: $28,000 − $6,682.50 − $400 = $20,917.50. Self-employment tax: $20,917.50 × 0.9235 × 15.3% is about $2,956, roughly $739 per quarter before income tax is even counted. Income tax comes on top and depends on filing status and any W-2 income. Enter your real numbers above for the full figure.

How the tax estimate is calculated

Mileage deduction = driving miles × $0.7425 (2026 average rate)Net profit = max(0, Instacart income − mileage deduction − other expenses)Self-employment tax = net profit × 0.9235 × 0.153Taxable income = net profit − (SE tax ÷ 2) − QBI + W-2 income − standard deductionTotal owed = self-employment tax + federal income tax

The mileage line uses the current IRS standard mileage rate (70 cents for 2025: check the current year's rate). For most shoppers it beats the actual-expense method, and it replaces fuel, maintenance, insurance and depreciation: you cannot claim both. Only driving miles go in that box; in-store shopping time adds nothing to it. This is an estimate, not tax advice. It uses federal figures only and ignores state and local tax entirely. The QBI deduction is approximated at a flat 20% of net profit; the real deduction has income thresholds, business-type limits and wage tests that can reduce or remove it. Confirm with a CPA or the IRS before filing or setting aside money.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much tax will I pay on $28,000 of Instacart income?

With 9,000 driving miles and $400 in gear, net profit lands near $20,900: roughly $2,950 of self-employment tax, plus income tax by bracket. Enter your own numbers above; driving miles move the answer more than anything else.

Where do I find my Instacart 1099-NEC?

In Stripe Express, not the Shopper app. Stripe emails you an invite to set up the account, and that email is easy to miss or lose to spam. Search your inbox for Stripe Express before assuming the form never came.

Does Instacart withhold taxes from batch pay or tips?

No. You are an independent contractor, so batch pay and tips both arrive gross. You pay self-employment tax and income tax yourself, ideally in quarterly estimated payments.

Can I deduct the miles I walk inside the store?

No. Mileage is a vehicle deduction, and your car is parked while you shop. Deduct the driving legs: store to customer, store to store, and repositioning between batches.

Do I owe taxes if I never got a 1099 from Instacart?

Yes. The form is a report, not a trigger: profit over $400 owes self-employment tax whether a 1099 arrives or not. Your deposit records are enough to file from.

What can Instacart shoppers deduct besides mileage?

Insulated bags and coolers, parking fees while shopping or delivering, cart fees, and the business share of your phone plan. These are small next to mileage, but they are real deductions. Keep receipts.

Should part-time shoppers pay quarterly estimated taxes?

If you expect to owe $1,000 or more for the year, yes. Alternatively, raise the W-2 withholding at your day job to cover it, which satisfies the IRS the same way.
