A calculator answers one question and stops. Feed it a roof area, it returns a bundle count. The arithmetic is right for whatever you typed, and that is where the damage starts, because most short material orders and thin invoices begin with an input nobody thought to check. WiFi QR codes that scan perfectly and connect to nothing

The payload is plain text in the format ZXing published: WIFI:T:WPA;S:NetworkName;P:password;; and nothing else. When a phone reads that and shows you the raw string instead of a join prompt, decoding worked. Recognition failed. Generic scanner apps display the text; the native iOS and Android cameras look for the WIFI: prefix and offer to connect.

Escaping breaks more codes than anything else. Semicolons, commas, colons, backslashes and double quotes inside an SSID or password each need a backslash in front, so a network called Joe's Cafe; Guest truncates at the semicolon and encodes a network that does not exist. A password of pure hex characters should be wrapped in double quotes, or a parser may read it as a raw 64-character PSK. Hidden networks need H:true, or the phone hunts for a beacon it will never hear. Open networks use T:nopass. WPA2-Enterprise cannot be expressed in this format at all, and iOS will not join 802.1X from a QR code.

Print quality is the other half. ISO/IEC 18004 requires a quiet zone of four blank modules on every side, so cropping the code flush with the artwork deletes part of the symbol. Error correction recovers roughly 7, 15, 25 and 30 percent of the data at levels L, M, Q and H. A logo over the middle of an L-level code eats more than the seven percent it has to give, which is how one file scans on a monitor and dies on a wall.

Reading a code without pointing a camera at it

Often the code sits in a screenshot on the only screen you have. Sometimes you already hold the decoded string and want the password out of it, which the WiFi QR decoder does by parsing pasted text rather than an image. Sometimes the point is seeing the destination first. Markup, margin, and the money that falls between them

A $1,000 cost with 30 percent markup prices at $1,300. Gross profit is $300, and $300 against a $1,300 sale is a 23.1 percent margin. The hours you can bill are not the hours you work

A nominal year holds 2,080 hours. Remove ten public holidays and two weeks off and 1,920 remain. Now subtract quoting, invoicing, chasing payment, and unbilled revisions. Sixty percent billable is respectable for a solo operator, leaving 1,152 hours. A $120,000 target divided by 1,152 is $104.17 an hour. Divide by 2,080 instead and you get $57.69, then work Saturdays all year to cover the gap. Every guide names its assumptions at the top: which code edition, which tax year, which rounding rule. Where a figure is trade habit rather than published requirement it says so, because a 10 percent roofing waste allowance is a convention and a four-module quiet zone is in the specification.
